R. Balki’s PadMan, starring Akshay Kumar is on a not-so-easy mission of breaking taboos that surround menstruation and hygiene. The film which is a biopic based on India’s PadMan, Arunachalam Muruganantham minted Rs 10.26 crore on its maiden day. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to Twitter to share the day one collection of PadMan. He wrote, ”#PadMan has a DECENT start… Fri ₹ 10.26 cr… The biz, expectedly, picked up towards evening/night shows… The journey ahead is crucial… Sat + Sun should witness strong growth for a good weekend total… India biz.” The film is reportedly made on a budget of Rs 90 crore.

PadMan’s rival Padmaavat is still in theatres and has raked in moolah. The Akshay Kumar starrer will face competition from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film, however, the viewers are likely to turn to R. Balki’s film in search of a fresh content. PadMan has got rave reviews from film critics for its subject and performances.

In the movie, Akshay is playing Lakshmikant Chauhan who doesn’t like his wife using filthy rag during periods. After his wife refuses to use ‘overpriced’ pads, the man embarks on a mission to make low-cost sanitary napkins. His family leaves him, he is even ridiculed for his efforts but his determination remains intact.

Coimbatore-base Arunachalam invented low-cost sanitary napkin making machine and brought revolution in the field of women empowerment. The story largely takes its plot from a short story in Twinkle Khanna’s book The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad. Twinkle is also co-producer of the movie.
